Autumn in Finnish Lapland is a breath-taking experience, as the landscape transforms into a vibrant tapestry of colours known as "Ruska" or Autumn Foliage. This natural phenomenon occurs as deciduous plants prepare for winter, shedding their leaves in a dazzling display of reds, oranges, and yellows. Ruska is a time of beauty and renewal, drawing visitors from all over the world to witness its splendour.

What is Ruska?

Ruska refers to the autumn foliage of deciduous plants (shed leaves seasonally), brought about by the pigments in the leaves. As the days shorten and temperatures drop, photosynthesis ceases, causing chlorophyll to break down. This reveals other pigments such as red anthocyanins, orange-red carotenoids, and yellow xanthophylls. The leaves then fall, marking the transition to winter.

When to See Ruska?

The timing of Ruska varies across Finland. In Northern Lapland, the peak usually occurs in the second week of September, with the colours lasting until late September. In Southern Lapland, including areas like Kuusamo and Rovaniemi, the peak happens between September 15-20. September in Pyhä is a feast for the eyes, with the fells ablaze in shades of red, orange, and yellow, and northern lights gracing the skies more frequently than in winter.

The Most Colorful Month of the Year is September

As the nights grow longer and the air turns crisper, the forests and fells glow with vibrant hues of orange, yellow, and red. Ruska is the favourite season for many visitors to Lapland. But what makes Ruska so enticing, and why should you experience it at Pyhä?

Crisp Days Beckon to the Fells

The peak Ruska season at Pyhä spans from mid-September to the end of the month, when the clear autumn days invite you to conquer the mountains. Pyhä's extensive trail network offers something for everyone, from seasoned hikers to first-time autumn adventurers. If you’re new to Pyhä, a visit to the Naava Nature Center is a must for personalized trail recommendations.

Prime Time for Northern Lights Watching

Contrary to popular belief, the best time to see the northern lights isn’t mid-winter. March-April and September-October are prime times for aurora hunters. During Ruska, the night sky offers a spectacular display of colours, both on the fells and above. The reflections of the autumn northern lights on calm lakes are a dream for photographers. Numerous apps predict northern lights appearances, but Aurora Alert Realtime Pyhä is tailored specifically for Pyhä’s conditions, sending alerts to your phone when the lights are visible to the naked eye.

Exciting Activities and Relaxation at the Fells

To admire the fiery autumn colours, ascend to the mountain top by foot or by bike. The PyhäExpress scenic lift provides an ideal vantage point, accommodating visitors of all ages and fitness levels. As a bustling autumn day winds down, it’s time to head back to your lodging, fire up the sauna, or book a group sauna experience by Lake Pyhäjärvi. We gathered some cosy accommodations offers for you at Pyhä, including apartments featuring private saunas and some spectacular northern lights-watching suited lodging.
